# IRC Channel
2 3 James Turnbull
3 1
There are two Puppet-related IRC channels: #puppet and #puppet-dev.
4 1
The #puppet IRC channel is located on the
5 1
[Freenode IRC network](http://freenode.net/) (see the
6 1
[Freenode server list](http://freenode.net/irc_servers.shtml)). It
7 1
is the hang out place for both users of Puppet (though you'll find
8 1
most of the developers in there too). The #puppet-dev channel is
9 1
also on the [Freenode IRC network](http://freenode.net/) and is
10 1
generally devoted to Puppet development discussions. If you have a
11 1
development question please feel free to pop in.
12 1
13 1
To keep everything humming along nicely, we have a few simple
14 1
rules:
15 1
16 1
- Before you ask on the channels, please search the wiki, mailing
17 1
list archives, and the web. Answering the same questions over and
18 1
over can test the patience of even the most dedicated volunteer.
19 1
- Don't ask if you can ask a question, just ask your question.
20 1
- Please provide us with the search path you followed while
21 1
searching the documentation, so we can improve the documentation.
22 1
- If you do not get an answer, please try posting on the
23 1
    [mailing list](http://groups.google.com/group/puppet-users/)
24 1
instead. There isn't always someone awake and alert on the channel
25 1
    who can help.
26 1
- If you *do* get an answer to your question, please update
27 1
[[Documentation Start]] so others don't have to ask the same
28 1
    question again and again.
29 1
- Be nice.

## Pasting configuration files
32 1
33 1
It is generally considered bad etiquette to paste large amounts of
34 1
text into an IRC channel, as it takes up all the screen space and
35 1
breaks the flow of conversation for other users. Instead, please
36 1
use a "pastie" service such as
37 1
[http://pastie.org/](http://pastie.org/) and just paste the URL to
38 1
your text into the channel.

## Automated Assistance
41 1
42 1
There is a bot in the #puppet and #puppet-dev channels, called
43 1
gepetto (the puppetmaster). It's purpose is to log the channel,
44 1
help with routine questions, and whatever else IRC bots usually do.
45 1
Try asking gepetto for help with "gepetto: help".
46 1
47 1
The bot is run by James Turnbull; if there are any problems, please
48 1
report them to james@lovedthanlost.net.

## Linking to Redmine and Trac
51 1
52 5 James Turnbull
The gepetto bot has the ability to dereference Trac and Redmine shortcut
53 1
links to the full link to the Puppet website. The bot currently
54 1
understands linking to tickets, wiki pages and Git changesets using
55 1
#NN, wiki:WikiPage, and changeset:GitSHA respectively.
56 1
57 1
If you're talking to somebody (you start the message with their
58 1
nick and a colon) then gepetto will also talk to them to give the
59 1
URL. So if you say freddy: Take a look at #93 then gepetto will say
60 6 James Turnbull
freddy: #93 is http://puppetlabs....
